Captains Cove-Francis "Frank" Alfred Bird, 81 of Captains Cove, VA, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD.
Born July 19, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Francis Joseph Bird and the late Elizabeth McClellan Bird.
Frank served in the U.S. Coast Guard prior to earning a bachelor's degree from Drexel University, and a Master's degree and Ph.D., CPA from Penn State. Following graduation, he taught at the University of Rhode Island as an Accounting Professor for 4 years before teaching at the University of Richmond, retiring in 1994 with 25 years of service and becoming Professor Emeritus. Frank was a gifted author with two published accounting books and was most proud of his recent book, "Understanding Accounting Fundamentals: The Logic of Debit and Credit" published in 2006.
Frank and his wife retired and moved to Captains Cove, where he enjoyed fishing, the Eastern Shore way of life, and spending time with his eight grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Pocomoke City.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Norma Myers Bird; two daughters, Carol Bird Matthews and her husband Dan of Captains Cove, VA and Sharon Bird Portier and her husband Phil of Pocomoke City, MD; eight grandchildren, Danielle Pastore, Claire Matthews, Ethan Matthews, Taylor Portier, Will Portier, Luke Portier, Madison Bird and Kelly Bird as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Danny Bird, and a sister, Patricia Bird Mansfield.
Family and friends will gather for a visitation at the Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City on Sunday from 5 - 7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Pocomoke City on Monday at 11 AM. Interment will follow in the Pitts Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Pocomoke City, MD.
