James Cecil Hopkins

Delmar, DE—James Cecil Hopkins went home to be with the Lord on September 27, 2012 at Delaware Hospice in Milford, DE Born in Sharptown, MD on June 30, 1922, he was the youngest child of the late Lorenzo and Mary Hopkins. Cecil, as we all called him, received his formal education in the Wicomico school system, graduating from the former Salisbury High School.

Upon leaving high school, Cecil entered the United States Army on July 7, 1944. During his military career, he was injured in Okinawa, Japan on January 17, 1946 which lead to his departure from the service on October 23, 1946. Before leaving the military, Cecil married Elizabeth Virginia Walker on February 25, 1946 and remained married until her passing on May 5, 1996. Together they shared 50 years of love and happiness as they raised their children. When Cecil left the military he entered employment at Singer Sewing Machine Company in Salisbury, and he was later transferred to Washington, DC, where he worked diligently until he retired. After retiring from Singer, Cecil began working at Riggs National Bank until he returned home to San Domingo. Once he came back to San Domingo, he became an active member of Zion United Methodist Church. He was a member of the United Methodist Men, Senior Choir, Men's Choir and he would help in many other areas whenever asked. Cecil was a very dedicated member of the Wednesday Night Bible Study and thoroughly enjoyed talking and learning about the Word of God. He truly loved God and his church and continued to contribute to both even during his illness through his prayers and finances. Cecil was a member of the American Legion Post #269 in Sharptown, and also a former member of Prince Hall Masons Lamech Lodge #30. He was also involved in community activities such as the Salisbury High School Association, a board member of the Chipman Foundation, and many other community based functions. In July of 1997, Cecil married Genevieve Smiley. The two were married until Genevieve's passing in June of 2000. Although their marriage was only for a short while, they enjoyed the time they had together.

Cecil will be leaving to cherish his memory, 2 children; Erskine Hopkins (Cynthia) of District Heights, Maryland and Karen Carey (James) of San Domingo, Maryland; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Cecil will also be missed by his significant other and loving care giver, Ruth Horsey. He had another "daughter" Rev. Gertrude Brown, a former pastor of the Sharptown Zion Charge who will also cherish his memory.

Cecil was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Pam.
