SALISBURY —W. Jerome "Rome" Sterling III of Salisbury passed Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at his home after battling cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Sterling; sons, Jerry Sterling and his wife, Kathy, of Salisbury and Dan Sterling and his wife, Evelina, of Marietta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Ben, Julianna, Ellie and Jack; sister, Ellen Jo Litsinger and her husband, Bill, of Parkville, Md.; nephews, Bill and Jim Litsinger and their families; niece, Katy Vanzant and her family; and a cousin, Peter Planz, and his wife, Betty of Loudenville, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Josephine P. Sterling.
Rome was very active in the community over the years while being a wonderful father to his boys and a wonderful husband. His main concern was raising his children including coaching soccer, helping with baseball, swim team and band. While raising his family he also finished college at Salisbury State College, earning a degree in accounting in 1976. His family owned M.C. Horsey Publishing Co., a financial statistical charting business, which he served as president for many years until 2003, when he retired.
Rome served in many areas of Asbury United Methodist Church, the Advisory Board of Maryland National Bank, trustee of Peninsula Regional Medical Center, founding director of the Del-Mar-Va YMCA, founding board member of Salisbury University Foundation, founding board member of Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and long-term member of Salvation Army of Salisbury serving in many capacities. He also served the Salisbury Urban Ministries and H.O.P.E. Recently he served on the board of Asbury Child Development Center. He also enjoyed reading, fishing and meeting with the ROMEOS of the Village of Tony Tank Creek.
A celebration of life service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the following: Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury, the Salvation Army of Salisbury, Salisbury Urban Ministries, H.O.P.E. or Coastal Hospice.
