Delmar—William M. "Pete" LeCates, 96, of Delmar, died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

He was born August 27, 1916 in Delmar, a son of the late Joseph W. LeCates and Ella S. LeCates-Sullivan.

Pete, as he was known, proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. After returning from the war he went to work for Conrail and retired in 1981 after 40 years of service. Over the years he worked as a laborer, car inspector, electrician, machinist and engineer. After retirement he operated his own lawnmower repair service, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He was a life member of the Delmar Volunteer Fire Department for over 62 years and served in various capacities as an active member for 51 of those years. Memberships included the Delmar American Legion Post 15, the Delmar VFW Post 8276, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Lodge and the Shady Pines Senior Group. He loved getting out and meeting friends at the McDonald's morning breakfast group and joining the Sunday morning breakfast group at Dayton's.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Patricia Ann Chandler and her husband. John, Jr. and Janice Hughes and her husband, Bill, with whom he lived for the past number of years, all of Delmar; 6 grandchildren, B.J. Hughes, Jeffrey Hughes, Laurie Ann Dickerson, Jennifer Reddy, Katie Gell and Johnny Chandler; and 11 great grandchildren, Kara, Kelsie and Brendan Hughes, Bruce Johnson, Matthew, C.J. and Zak Dickerson, Davi and Shanta Reddy and Ethan and Lizzie Gell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; a good friend, Cheryl, who called him every evening faithfully to check on him; and the family cat, "Friskie."

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Grace E. LeCates, who passed in 2002; and a sister, Flora Gravenor.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, and also Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.. A fireman's funeral will begin at 11:00 on Friday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar.
