EAST NEW MARKET — Jerry Joseph Abbott, 66, of East New Market died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
Born Nov. 10, 1946, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Reginald Edward Abbott and Louise Muir Abbott.
He was a 1964 graduate of Wicomico High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1970. On Feb. 4, 1967, he married Eunice Ann Blades. Together they owned and operated Suicide Bridge Restaurant from 1971 to 1984. For many years Mr. Abbott was a sales representative for Chesapeake Equipment Company until his retirement in 2010.
He was a founding member and former president of North Dorchester Jaycees and when his sons were young coached area youth baseball and soccer. He was former member of Cambridge Moose Lodge 631 and Poor Boys Yacht Club. He was currently a member of Hurlock American Legion Post 243 and American Pool Players Association.
He is survived by two sons, Kenny Abbott and his companion, Frances Dayton, of East New Market and Christopher Shane Abbott and his wife, Heather, of East New Market; a grandson, Kenny Abbott of Cambridge; a granddaughter, Kari Abbott of Trappe; a sister, Gina McGriff of Salisbury and a brother, James Abbott of Fruitland; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Ann Abbott, who died on Sept. 15, 2001.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 19, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. at Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, where friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Mr. David Tolley will officiate. Interment will follow in East New Market Cemetery.
Kenny Abbott, Donnie Cheesman, Dave Regester, Sam Shelly, Troy Townsend and Jake Townsend will serve as pallbearers. Mike Dickinson, Jimmy Jacobs, Les Bowser, and Jim Hart will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zeller Funeral Home to assist the family at this difficult time.
