Pittsville—Retired Major James (Jim) Washington Hooke, Sr., 88, of Pittsville, Maryland, died December 3, 2012. Jim was born on February 22, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Robert J. and Gertrude Delia Hooke. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Louise Hooke.
Following graduation from Baltimore City College, he began his distinguished United States Military career, which took him around the world on many tours of duty. He served with the Navy in World War II as a gunner and radio operator in both the Pacific Theatre and the American Theatre. His career took him to the Air Force to follow his dreams of becoming a pilot. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Pilot School in 1950 where he received his Pilot Wings. Jim served as a Pilot in the 17th Bombardment Wing in the Strategic Air Command and flew both B-52 and B-47 aircraft in missions.
During his 22 year Air Force and Navy career, Jim earned many decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal, Gold Star 2nd Air Medal, Gold Star 3rd Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon and Victory Medal.
Memberships included the Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion and The Disabled American Veterans.
Following retirement Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling. He was an avid reader, gardener and a "Jack of All Trades". Jim and Mary spent many winters in Key West, Florida where they enjoyed their wonderful friends. Jim never knew a stranger, making all those around him smile with his jokes and many war stories.
He is also survived by his six children, James W. Hooke, Jr. (Baltimore, MD), Howard Norris Hooke (Baltimore, MD), Jacqueline Tierney Cymek (Baltimore, MD), Brian Emmet Hooke (Pittsville, MD), Jean Marie Hooke Sewell (Salisbury, MD), Donavan Keith Hooke (Fruitland, MD); devoted daughters in law Terry Hooke, Laurie Marx and Edie Hooke; devoted sons in law, Milton Cymek, Jr. and Mark D. Sewell; five wonderful grandchildren, Jamie Matulonis, Milton Cymek, III, Elizabeth Crofoot, Jack Sewell and Alex Sewell; two great grandchildren Wyatt and Garrett Matulonis and brother John Hooke. He was predeceased by his siblings Robert Hooke, Albert Michael Hooke and Margaret Maher.
Friends may visit from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with the Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
