Obituary Condolences

John Whitaker

Salisbury—John Whitaker, better known to family and friends as "Johnny," departed this life Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the Anchorage Nursing Home in Salisbury.

His life began in Little Washington, N.C., where he left school at an early age to assist his father on their farm. He was captured by the desire to see the world as a teen and in due time he falsified his age in order to join the Army during World War II. His Army career was short-lived, however, when a childhood accident made him unfit for marching long distances in the infantry. After his discharge from the Army, he moved to the North, settling in Connecticut, where he went to work for Winchester, making munitions for the war.

From there he went to New York, than traveled to Chicago and points further West but it was the bright lights of the big city that drew him back to New York. He got a job as an elevator operator which led to him meeting his future wife, Lucille Hearn. The two were married and remained so until her passing in 1994.

Not wanting to raise their daughter in the city, Lucille insisted that they return to the family homestead in Delmar and he agreed. Johnny made friends easily and he soon felt at home in Maryland. He found his niche when he went to work for Holloway's Nursery as a landscaper and he remained there for over 30 years until his retirement.

He will always be remembered for his love of blues, guitar playing, cool fashion sense and his humorous stories about life.
