SALISBURY-June Marian Cotter, 94, of Salisbury, formerly of Summit, N.J., passed away peacefully at home Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Helen Sullivan Quane and Henry James Quane, she was born on Jan. 8, 1919, in Anaconda, Mont.
From the age of 8 until she departed home for college, she lived with her family in that town's City Hall/Fire Station in an apartment provided to her father in his position as fire chief. After graduating from St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, Kan., with a degree in music, she moved to New York City to pursue a career singing opera.
In 1950, she married the late David C. Cotter, and together they raised their seven children, Brian of Portland, Ore., John (Karen) of Bloomsburg, Pa., Patricia Englert (Peter) of Harrisville, N.H., Mark (Norma) of Salisbury, Christopher (Karen) of Summit, N.J., Mary Ellen Larkin (Myles) of Fulton, Md., and Kevin (Amy) of Bedford, N.Y.
A longtime choral director and member of several singing groups, Mrs. Cotter cherished her time as a music teacher and member of the choir at St. Teresa's Parish in Summit, N.J. As an unwavering champion for the unborn, Mrs. Cotter touched many lives. When asked what motivated her as a mother, teacher and advocate, she simply replied "I loved children." In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Patrick, and sisters, Helen and Marjorie. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless loving friends.
The family will receive friends at Holloway Funeral Home Monday, Aug. 26, from 6-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church in Salisbury. Graveside services and burial will be at St. Teresa's Cemetery in Summit, N.J., Thursday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m.
