Norman Crane Crawford Jr.

Ocean Pines-Norman Crane Crawford Jr., 85, of Ocean Pines, died peacefully at Atlantic General Hospital, Thursday, May 12, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 30, 1930 in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Norman Crane Crawford Sr. and Anna Wares Crawford. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Page, and her husband, William. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Garnette Bell Crawford, two daughters, Sally Crawford of West Ocean City, and Ellen Price (Chris) of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Chris and two cats.

A life-long educator, he gained a sense of values through scouting, ultimately achieving Eagle Scout, and a love of sports through his local YMCA. He earned his Bachelor of Science in education and Master of Education from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in higher education administration.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years as a lieutenant during the Korean Conflict, and taught at the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, where he met Garnette.

After military service, his first job was at Rutgers University, followed by positions with the National Merit Scholarship Corp. in Evanston, IL; the Division of Higher Education of the U.S. Office of Health, Education and Welfare; and the University of Delaware. At the age of 39, he became the fifth president of Salisbury University serving from 1970-80.

After leaving Salisbury, he continued his career in executive positions in higher education, at Drury College, MO (president); the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in Washington, D.C.; University of Maine, Farmington (acting president); and Thomas Edison State University (vice president).

Upon retirement, he and Garnette returned to the Eastern Shore where they have been active members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Berlin.

Services are scheduled at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 3 p.m. Friday, May 20, with Rev. Michael Moyer officiating. A memorial service at Salisbury University is also being planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: The Norman Crawford Memorial Fund, c/o Salisbury University Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 2655, Salisbury, MD 21801-2655 or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 3 Church St., Berlin, MD 21811.

Dear Garnette, Sally and Ellen, a notification appeared in my email tonight. Wow. It's been 4 years since Dr. Crawford passed. It brought back great memories. With the world going sideways right now, I send good wishes to you and your families and good wishes for safety and health. I am no longer in CT after moving to Sydney, Australia 6 years ago. He lit the fuse for me to be my best. And, to take chances!! I did. And, it's the best decision I ever made. Salisbury to Sydney. God bless you all.

Dear Garnette, Sally and Ellen, my condolences on the death of your husband and father. I was fortunate to know Dr. Crawford on a personal level while at SSC. He was a good friend. And, mentor. As the student manager of the college dining hall during my tenure ('73 - '79) it was always a joy when were tasked to "work" a function at his home or at one the SSU's venues. He was amazing!!! We spoke on the phone a many years ago while I was living in CT. He was the same Dr. C. Encouraging and funny. He was truly a man among man. He will be missed by all who knew him. Take care and Be Well. Eddie Rowe as he used to call me.

As a former SU student, my mother worked very closely with Dr. Crawford at Salisbury University (then SSC). Oh so many will agree with me when I say he was truly a man who believed in and cared about all. Sending our most sincere condolences.
