John G. Ullrich, Sr.

Berlin-John Greif Ullrich, Sr. 77, of Heathsville, VA and formerly of Baltimore, MD and Berlin, MD died Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, VA.

Born in Baltimore December 17, 1938, he was a son of the late John Ullrich, Jr. and Anna Sause Ullrich. All of his great-grandparents were born in Germany, and he was extremely proud of his European heritage. He graduated from Baltimore City College, Columbian Preparatory School, the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he earned a BS Degree, a Third Mates License and a Naval Commission; and Eckels College where he was awarded an MS Degree. In 1967 he moved to Berlin, building and opening the Ullrich Funeral Home, extending a family business begun in Baltimore in 1872. As a fifty year Mason, he was Raised in Monumental Lodge # 96 in Baltimore, transferring his membership to Evergreen Lodge # 153, AF&AM , in Berlin, MD. John was a member and Past President of the Berlin-Ocean City Jaycees, a Life Member & the oldest living Past President of the Berlin Lions Club, Ocean City Power Squadron, MD State Funeral Directors Association, Charter Member of the Ocean City chapter of the International Wine & Food Society, and other civic clubs. He held a license as a funeral director in Maryland and Virginia for over 50 years. While in Berlin he was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; and St. Paul's by the Sea Church, in Ocean City. He and Andrea retired and moved to Virginia in 2005. Life-long interests included: antique cars & their restoration, photography, model railroading, and wood working.

His survivors include his wife of over 34 years, Andrea Stevenson Ullrich; five children: Kimberly U. Love of Washington, VA, John G. Ullrich, Jr., of Rosamond, Ca; Kari U. Sjoberg of Heathsville, VA, Kyle T. Ullrich and wife Jeannie of Burgess, VA & Kory S.T. Ullrich of Burgess, Va. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Grayson. K. Love, Savannah P. Waters, Jacob M. Love, Reese A. Ullrich, Renee Ullrich and Brittany E. Williams. Also surviving is a brother, Robert C. Ullrich of Exeter, NH and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Andrea and family . So sorry to hear of John's passing. I know he had struggled in recent years. I will always remember him as a good man with a sense of humor and fondly think back on all the days he fixed breakfast at the Surf and Sands.
