Mary Magdelena Owens

Mary Magdalena Owens, 93, passed away on Sept. 30, 2012, in Deming, N.M., full of faith and blessed assurance, and surrounded by family and friends.
She lived independently until she was 92 and spent her final months under the wonderful care of the staff, known as her "second family," at the Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home.
She enjoyed following politics, the occasional Minnesota Twins baseball game, playing Scrabble and cards with her grandkids, and church service on the radio. She was an avid reader and rarely could her daughters keep around enough new large print books for her to read. Friends and family knew her cooking and baking well - and many commented on the delicious homemade buns, bread and cinnamon rolls that came from her kitchen.
Born on Dec. 21, 1918, in Harlow, N.D., to Ole Jorgen Sminesvik and Rachel Muri Sminesvik, Mary was oldest of nine children. Mary moved to Chicago in 1940 to pursue her education. She received her bachelor's of nursing degree in June 1944, and went on to pursue a master's degree in social work, graduating in spring 1951.
Mary met Gordon Joseph Owens, Joe, while on leave from her nursing training in Chicago. She claimed he was the perfect choice of a husband for her, and wasn't intimidated by her education. They were engaged in December 1951, and married on June 19, 1952. She had the first of four daughters at the age of 34, and the last daughter just two months before her 40th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe; brothers, Olaf Robert and Harold; and sisters, Margaret and Jeanette.
She is survived by her daughters Alice Rieger (Duane), Joyce Sainz (Carlos), Marti Egnaczak (Jim) and Mary Frosch (Robert); grandchildren Joyelle Owens, Tina Rieger Bearfield (Joe), Marie Caballero, Mario Caballero, Joann Rieger Ford, Theresa Jo Sainz Campbell (Chris), Manny Caballero, Bianca Egnaczak, Carlos Richard Sainz (Elaine), Jenna Frosch, Luke Egnaczak (Stacy) and Jonathan Frosch; and great-grandchildren George, Adam and Chris Bearfield; Taylor Jo and Carter Ford; Kristin, Christian and Carlos Campbell; Hailey Sainz; Haiden and Gabrielle Egnaczak; Alisha Caballero; Brianna Caballero; and Michelle Caballero.
Pallbearers are sons-in-law Duane Rieger, Carlos Sainz, Jim Egnaczak and Robert Frosch, and grandsons Manny Caballero and Carlos Richard Sainz. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Luke Egnaczak, Jonathan Frosch and Mario Caballero.
