Lois Marie (Ruebush) Acker, 85, of Las Cruces and formerly of Deming, entered eternal life Friday Jan. 31, 2014 at Sagecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 9, 1929 in Deming to Samuel Roy Ruebush and Bertha Myrtle Bryant. Lois loved cooking for her family and was recognized by the Pillsbury Company as one of the ten best cooks in New Mexico. In 1964 she entered the Pillsbury Bake-Off and won a trip to Miami Beach with her recipe for Mexicali Meat Pie. In 1971 she again entered the Pillsbury Bake-Off and won a trip to Hawaii with her recipe for Bar-B-Quick Sticks. While living in Deming she sold Avon and Fuller Brush products. For several years she worked as a bookkeeper at Deming Ladies Hospital and at the Western Furniture store. She also was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a philanthropic organization. In 1990 Lois and her husband moved to Las Cruces, where she enjoyed baking for her family and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Clay Acker and wife Catherine of Las Cruces, a grandson, Kyle Acker of Philadelphia, PA, a granddaughter, Kimberly Acker of Hot Springs, SD, and a brother, Leonard Ruebush of Odessa, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Rex Acker, and one son, Brady Acker. Visitation for Mrs. Acker will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 in Baca's Peace Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road, where the Funeral Service is scheduled for 10 a.m. A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m. the same afternoon at Mountain View Cemetery in Deming where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
