Phyllis Leland, 81, Deming resident passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Baca's Mimbres Crematory and there are no funeral services scheduled at this time. Phyllis was born on December 5, 1932 in West Bend, Wisconsin to Bessie Cooke and Daniel Survis. By the tender age of three, Phyllis demonstrated a knack for music by being able to playback any tune she heard on the piano. She continued her training as a musician and became a very accomplished piano player. Phyllis also used the accordion for sing-a-longs. In 1959 Phyllis married Louis B. Leland in Las Vegas, NV and they began a loving family. Louis later retired from the Navy and then also from the Stearns County Sheriff's Department. Throughout her career she worked as the head master's secretary for St. John's University Prep School, where she ultimately retired from in 1992. She also enjoyed supporting the VFW and was an active member of the American Legion. She is survived by her husband, Louis; a daughter, Colleen Patricia Wallraff; a son, Louis Jr. Leland of Deming; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents Bessie and Daniel Survis; a brother, Forrest Survis; and step-son, David Harris. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
