Leah Beth Brown, 58, died at 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 31, 2013 in her bed in Deming, NM. Both of her sons held her as she passed.
The Guest Book is expired.
She had staunchly battled cancer and was optimistic about the results of treatment, but when her cancer returned, she opted to not continue with medical procedures and enjoy her last days with her sons.
She was born Leah Beth Waldrop on June 2, 1954 in Deming, New Mexico. Her parents, Bob and Barbara Waldrop, owned a farm west of town where she grew up working with her brothers Everett, Bryan and Richard, and her sisters Karen and Sarah.
She was close friends with Susan Morris, Kay Schraeder, and Doris Johnson.
Eventually, she married Doris's brother, Lonnie Johnson. They divorced, but not before she gave birth to her first son, Jeremy Miles Johnson.
She worked hard to support her family and attend NMSU, where she studied geology. In her courses, she met Mark Brown and they married in Organ, NM. Together they moved to Bloomington, IN.
Leah worked at the newspaper for Indiana University and bent the rules to be the scout leader of her son's Cub Scout troop. She gave birth to her second son, Gary Michael Brown in Bloomington. Together, Leah, Mark, Jeremy, and Gary, moved to Houston, TX.
When Leah and Mark divorced, she returned, with Gary, to Deming to care for her family. She became a teacher and began teaching math. While there, she was a sponsor for Science Olympiad, B.E.S.T. Robotics and F.I.R.S.T. Robotics, and she spent summers teaching and helping her kids improve their math skills, which included teaching Fraction Camp.
She lived for teaching, and did it right up until she could no longer continue.
Her last days were filled with friends and family.
Leah is survived by her sons Jeremy Johnson and Gary Brown, by her parents Bob and Barbara Waldrop and by her brothers and sisters, Everett Waldrop, Bryan Waldrop, Richard Waldrop, Karen Waldrop and Sarah Turvey.
She will be missed by all her family and friends.
Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 5 p.m., at Terrazas Funeral Chapels, with John Clark officiating.
