Lester C. "Papa" Rider, 89, a resident of Deming, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at La Posada in Las Cruces.

A memorial service will be this Monday March 11, 2013 at 10 o'clock in the morning at the First Baptist Church with inurnment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Former pastor Kenneth Long will officiate.
Les was born January 27, 1924 in Winchester, Illinois to Lester and Hattie Rider. He entered the United States Navy in May of 1941 and later entered the United States Air force from which he retired on October 31, 1962.
After retiring from the Air Force, Les worked for Los Angeles County as an aircraft parts inspector for a few years and eventually came to Deming in 1966.
Locally, he became employed by the New Mexico State Highway Department until his retirement.
He enjoyed being outdoors, being with his family and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Jesse R. "Tex" Moss (Mary) of Spokane, WA; 2 daughters, Jeanne Walls (Larry) of Spokane, WA and Carole Ruebush (Stanley) of Deming; 8 grandchildren, Brian, Florence, Pat, Judi, Christi, Timothy, Kelly, and Teresa; 13 great-grandchildren, Branden, Jazmin, Quentien, Summer, Christopher, Candice, Zachary, Rachel, Nicholas, Hannah, Kelly, Jaime and Jesse; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Colin; sister, Reba Hester (Dean) of Glasgow, IL, and son-in-law, Tim O'Neill of Deming.
Les was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Julia, daughter Judith "Cookie" O'Neill, siblings, Doris, Pearl, Gladys, Ethel and Clifford, and a great-grandson, Patrick Stewart.
