Robert Clemmer Palmer was born in Deming, N.M. on March 31, 1944 to Robert S. Palmer and Mary Margaret Palmer. He graduated from Deming High School in 1961 and continued his education at both the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and the George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. After graduating from medical school and completing his internship in Internal Medicine, Robert served in the United States Air Force where he spent time stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and in Thailand. Upon Honorable Discharge from the military, he joined the Mollie Scott Clinic in Sun Valley, Idaho, practicing general medicine for several years. Subsequently, he had practiced internal medicine in San Diego before going to Boston, Massachusetts where he studied gastroenterology, a specialty area. Thereafter, Dr. Palmer taught at the University of New Mexico Medical School and also practiced medicine at the V.A. Hospital. While in Idaho, Rob, as he was known by friends, frequently used his private pilot's license to travel and enjoy the magnificent scenery. He had a great fondness for the West, its mountains and the desert. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing golf, entering many tournaments, achieving great success on the green. Upon retirement, Rob returned to his hometown of Deming, taking an interest in historical research, classic car collecting and gardening. His plans had included traveling South to help the people of Mexico by offering them healthcare, but due to the unrest across the border, was unable to fulfill that dream. Rob purchased the old pool hall building on Silver Street, hoping to one day restore it to its former glory and make it a place for the residents of Luna County to gather, reconnect and reminisce. Dr. Palmer is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him are his sister, Carolyn Palmer, and nieces, Regina Daly and Margaret Daly. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Terrazas Funeral Chapels beginning at 10 a.m. with Father Ron Machado officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Deming Humane Society, 2135 Onate Ave. SE, Deming, NM 88030.
