Shumway, Frank R., Jr.
Key Largo, FL: Frank Ritter Shumway, Jr., 79, of Key Largo, FL, died in Florida, Thursday, March 7, 2013. He was born May 9, 1933, in New Rochelle, NY, to the late F. Ritter and Hettie Shumway.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Petrossi Shumway; and his son, Frank Ritter Shumway, III (Skip); daughter-in-law, Dawn Gray Shumway; grandson, Conner Shumway; brother, Charlie (Faye) Shumway; and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Mary Ellen Gaylord.
Frank was a long time resident of Rochester, NY. He graduated from Princeton University, served as a jet pilot in the US Air Force, and worked in his father's business; the Ritter Company. In 1968, he and Shirley built Shumway Marine. He was an avid boater; he raced sailboats competitively for over 50 years, he organized world-renowned regattas, commissioned the design of the Ideal 18, enjoyed fishing and generally loved being on and close to the water. He was a Past Commodore of the Rochester Yacht Club, Card Sound Sailing Club and Ocean Reef Yacht Club. Frank was also involved with the Clayton Antique Boat Museum. He was an active investor in Rochester businesses including the Strathallen Hotel, Woodcliff Hotel and Daisy Flower Mill. He served on the Board of the Rochester General Hospital and was involved in many community foundations as a generous philanthropist.
A memorial service is being planned in Rochester for this summer. Shirley, Skip & Dawn, Your husband and father was one of the great ones. We will always remember Frank, and how he loved to watch the young ones learn to race.
