Roland, Evelyn
Roland, Evelyn Cornish Penfield: 98, formerly of Penfield, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 17, 2016, in New London, NH, following a stroke. She was predeceased by her husband, Duane, in January, 1996; and daughter-in-law Susan D. Roland. Evelyn is survived by her children: Duane Jr. (Carol) Roland; Lynne (Bill) Hoyt; MJ (Ralph) Barber; Beth (Phil) Hunter; David (Suzi) Roland; and Dr. Chieko (Dr. Hiroshi) Inoue, Japan, who became part of the family as an exchange student at Penfield High School; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 step-grandchildren. Evelyn was born in Collegeville, PA, February 17, 1918, the daughter of Dr. Samuel D. Cornish and Irene Sacks Cornish. She graduated Ursinus College and attended Women's Medical College of Philadelphia before marrying Duane July 3, 1943. In 1972 she earned her Masters of Library Science from Geneseo. Evelyn was the Librarian for the Columbia School for Girls and later the Allendale-Columbia School, responsible for merging the two schools' libraries. Evelyn had many artistic interests, including ceramics, silk-screening, knitting, sewing, embroidery and jewelry making. She was an avid investor who read her Wall Street Journal daily, researching and discussing interesting stocks with her children and grandchildren. After learning to ski at 45, Evelyn skied until the age of 83 and played golf until 3 years ago. In her early 80s, Evelyn attended aerobics classes and started pumping iron to keep up with her children and grandchildren. She served on the Board of Directors of the Collegeville Flag & Costume Company, and developed several small companies while raising her family. Evelyn was a member of Third Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon, the Chestnut Twig, and the Penfield Country Club. Mom was the Light of our Family, and the Rock that held us all together. We will miss her and treasure the memories and the laughter we shared. She will be buried next to her beloved husband, Duane, in White Haven. There will be a Celebration of her Life at Third Presbyterian Church, Meigs St., Rochester, NY, Saturday, May 7 at 11 o'clock.
