Todd, Richard K. "Dick" "Coach"
Chili: Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the age of 79. He was born to John and Helen (O'Connor) Todd on January 21, 1933 in Hornell, NY. Dick had a life long passion for football. His accomplishments as a player led to his induction into the Hornell H. S. Sports Hall of Fame and a scholarship to Princeton University
. He cut his teeth as an Assistant Football Coach at Corning-Painted Post West H.S. from 1964-1970 before becoming the Head Coach at Hilton Central H.S., a program which he led for 16 years from its inception in 1971, earning Monroe County Coach of the year honors in 1977. He also had an affinity for Mathematics, receiving a B.S. with distinction from the University of Rochester and an M.A. with honors from Bowdoin College and teaching High School Math for 28 years. A lover of jazz and classical music, he amassed a large collection of recordings and enjoyed attending concerts. Crossword puzzles provided an enjoyable outlet for his encyclopedic knowledge of cinematic and other trivia. As a youth he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Later he joined the U.S. Army
, serving a tour in Japan before taking flight training with the U.S. Air Force
Predeceased by his brother, Douglas. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gayel (VanFleet); sons, John (Mary) and their sons, (Hunter, Colin) of Sterling, VA., Mark (Elizabeth) and their sons, (Ricky, Jack) of Rochester, NY and Eric (Cynthia) and their daughters, (Alanna, Teagan) of Marietta, NY; brothers, Thomas (Jean), Stephen (Barbara) and Russell (Nancy); brothers-in-law, Gerald (Doris), Larry (Gloria) and Lynn (JoAnn) VanFleet; and many nieces and nephews. Dick was a member of the United Methodist Church of N. Chili and an enthusiastic member of the Men's Breakfast Club, and a past member of the Hilton United Methodist Church.
Friends are invited to his Memorial Service Monday 10 AM at the United Methodist Church of N. Chili., 2200 Westside Dr., Rochester, 14624 with a reception to immediately follow at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the
