Stanley, Vincent J. Sr.
Geneseo/Rochester: November 11, 2012 on Veterans Day. He was a great American, veteran, patriot, father, uncle, great uncle, and friend to many. He was born Dec. 22, 1916 and lived an amazing life. He lost his father in a mining accident when he was in his teens and started working in the mines of Scranton, PA. He put himself through Lafayette College in Easton, PA where he was president of the non-fraternity group and also achieved a Phi Beta Kappa key in his junior year. He enlisted in the Army
Air Corps and was stationed in England for much of WWII
where he met Evelyn Walters who would later become his wife for 64 years. Upon leaving the military he worked briefly for Philco Corp in upstate NY. He was their top salesman in the country when he left to form his own business, V.J. Stanley Company in Rochester. It would later become V.J. Stanley Inc. and 62 years later it's still operating with over 20 employees. Vince was an avid tennis player all his life who continued to play well into his 80's. In May of 1999 he was presented the Monroe County Rotarian
of the Year Award and on that day the county manager named it Vincent Stanley day. His award list is lengthy and includes: Honorary Chairman of the Rochester Literacy Commission, 2007 RACF Philanthropy Award, Silver Nail Award from Habitat for Humanity, and the 2009 Senior Citizen of the Year Award from Maggie Brooks. Vince served as President of the Rochester Red Wings for a number of years. These are only a few in an amazing 95+ years.
His caregivers Gloria Castner and Linda Fraser were with him 24/7 often near the end and were a great comfort as were the calls from family friend Catherine Laglia. The rest of his wonderful care team were Cheryl Haynes, Dianna Burus and Gloria Mastin. Mike Zaremski's personal and business support was invaluable as well as his neighbors Bob and Mary Lou Martin's friendship.
He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn and his son Dean Stanley. He is survived by his sons, John (Susan) Stanley of Geneseo and V.J. (Katie) Stanley Jr. of Rochester. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren Justin, Zachary, Clayton and Molly and loved them dearly. Vince was Uncle Billy to his side of the family due to a baptism error and all who called him Billy were special to him.
