William French

French, William T.

Pittsford: Passed away at age 92 on October 15, 2013. Mr. French was born October, 1 1921 in Savannah, GA and grew up in Miami, FL. He graduated from University of Florida with a degree in chemical engineering and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He served in World War 2, fought in the battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star with valor.

After the war, he stayed in the Army, returned to Germany where he met his future wife, Sophia (Oostergetel), a native of the Netherlands, who was working for the United Nations in Germany.

He returned to Washington, DC where he received his law degree at George Washington University, married Sophia and began his career at the US Patent Office.

He and his family moved to Rochester in 1961 where he began his 24-year career at Kodak as a patent attorney. After his retirement from Kodak, he volunteered at the District Attorney's office, provided patent counsel for Bausch & Lomb and was of counsel to Nixon Peabody law firm, where he helped establish the firm's intellectual property practice in Rochester.

He was an avid skier and runner, completing his first marathon at the age of 60. He was devoted to family and traveled extensively with them. His warm personality, intelligence and keen sense of humor will always be remembered.

He is predeceased by his daughter, Sophia Elizabeth French. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sophia; his daughters, Johanna (John) Brennan, Mary Anne (Tom) Wega, and Nancy (Bob) Gerlach; grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Brennan, Mariel and Caroline Wega, and William and Derek Gerlach; and Pete, the cat.

The family wishes to thank his health aides, Nora, Zenobvia, Equilla, Joan, Sholanda, Juanita, Sallay for the wonderful care they gave him in the last year of his life.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 18, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church, 36 South Main Street, Pittsford, NY 14534. Interment will be held privately at White Haven Memorial Park.
