Benjamin Phelosof Obituary

Phelosof, Benjamin

Rochester: Benjamin "Ben" died March 26th, 2014 at the age of 92. Ben was a landmark in the Rochester legal community. Raised in the Bronx, Ben attended New York City schools, including CCNY. After serving with distinction in WW II, Ben attended Harvard Law School, an endeavor supported by his wife of many years, May Frieda Kramer Phelosof. They were married in 1944 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Ben's practice was general in nature, and he selflessly devoted his time to pro bono work. All who knew him appreciated his wisdom, his dry sense of humor and his belief in a higher cause. He is survived by two children, Avram and Shulamith, and two grandchildren, Nadezhda and Jacob Habinek.

Ben was a true friend in every sense of that phrase: companionable, interested, helpful, understanding. He and I, with our wives, enjoyed life together. He was always available when legal service was needed and his professional skills were exceptional. I shall never stop missing him.

Ben Phelosof will be greatly missed. I will also remember him as a true gentleman and gentle man in every sense of the word. He was a kind, loyal friend to my mom and dad, and I always loved his wit and wisdom. It was a privilege to know Ben.

It was a pleasure to make common cause with Ben dating back to the 60's in legal matters and on behalf of the ACLU and the Monroe County Democratic Party. I valued his friendship and his legal ability.
