Exley-Stiegler, (The Rev.) George

Rochester: Died on January 23, 2013 at the age of 96, senior priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester and former Canon of Metropolitan Ministry. Predeceased by his first wife Edna Stiegler, survived by his loving wife of 35 years Anne Exley-Stiegler, children: The Rev. Mark Stiegler (Shirley), Nancy Bell (Jonathan), Norman Exley (Frances) and Ruth Kunselman; ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; sister Grace Phipps, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends through out the United States and England.

The Rev. George Exley-Stiegler was an Episcopal priest, leader in the local and national church, social action advocate, educator, advocate for women in ministry, inner city ministry developer, and outspoken champion in our society for those who had no voice. George's commitment to doing justice as a primary means of living out the Gospel was unshakeable.

George earned his undergraduate degree in business and finance from Syracuse University and Masters of Divinity from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University. He studied Spanish language and culture in Cuernavaca Mexico, New Testament Theology and Dimensions in International Ministry at Mansfield College at Oxford University in England. George served congregations as a priest in Camden, Cleveland, Brockport and Rochester New York, LaRomana Dominican Republic, Knowsley Village and Skelmersdale England and Abaco Island Bahamas. He was architect of the merger of Calvary Presbyterian and St. Andrews Episcopal churches, later known as Calvary-St. Andrews Church located in the South Wedge, where a unique and highly valuable ministry to the neighborhood was developed. George served as pastor to a newly developed Spanish speaking congregation, which he created at Calvary-St. Andrews. He served as an accredited supervising pastor mentoring students in the Field Education Program of Colgate Rochester Divinity School / Bexley Hall / Crozer Theological Seminary.

After retirement, George and Anne lived in England where he was a Lecturer and Director of Pastoral Ministry at the Upholland Northern Institute located near Liverpool. He served as Lecturer of Theology and Urban Ministry at the University of Liverpool, England.

No prior calling. A private vigil for immediate family, staff and residents of the Episcopal Senior Life Community will be held at 3:30, February 1st in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at the Episcopal Church Home, 505 Mt. Hope Avenue. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 11:00 on Saturday, February 2nd at The Church of St. Luke and St. Simon Cyrene, 17 Fitzhugh Street, Rochester.
