Lionel McKenzie Obituary

Born in Montezuma, Georgia, Professor McKenzie died in Rochester, NY on October 12, 2010. Lionel was predeceased by his wife, Blanche Veron McKenzie; son, Fred and daughter, Gwendolyn. He is survived by his son, David; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Professor McKenzie graduated from Duke University and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton. He continued his studies at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and then subsequently taught at MIT and Duke before coming to Rochester in 1957 to establish the graduate program in the Department of Economics. Professor McKenzie's research established him as one of the giants of contemporary mathematical economics. In 2002, he published "Classical General Equilibrium Theory", from MIT Press, based on the lecture notes that were familiar to all his students over the years. He also played a pivotal role in fostering Japanese scholars and actively promoted Japan-US academic exchange and friendship. In 1995, The Japanese government honored Professor McKenzie's lifelong contribution to economics and to the Japanese nation by awarding him The Order of the Rising Sun. He was the Wilson Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Rochester.
Funeral Services will be private with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Donations to the Lionel & Blanche McKenzie Family Scholarship Fund (c/o University of Rochester, 590 Mt. Hope Ave., Rochester, NY 14620) will be accepted in his memory. Arrangements Crawford Funeral Home Inc.

Lionel was active in the Rochester English Speaking Union, and we were fully expecting him at our poetry reading at the Old Toad pub the evening when he went in hospital.He will be sorely missed by oldtimers and newcomers as well for his charm and intelligence.
