Brighton: Died peacefully on his 93rd birthday, August 18, 2013, in Brighton, NY, after a long illness. Throughout all that life brings us, good and bad, Sebastian remained resilient and kind to all he met.
He was born on August 18, 1920 the only child of Joseph Paul and Ignazia Fichera in Rochester, N.Y. He graduated from Rochester's Aquinas Institute and received a degree in business administration from an extension of Niagara University in Rochester. Sebastian served in the army during WWII and returned to Rochester where he met and married S. Natalie Finocchiaro whom he always lovingly referred to as his "Doll." They were married in 1948 and stayed together for 65 years. For about 30 years, he worked as the bookkeeper for Saucke Brothers Construction Co. in Rochester.
Sebastian was a leader in his family, church and community. He led by personal example inspired by his deep faith in the teachings of the Catholic church and his personal humility and love of his family. His kindness and humor were special to all who met him. He was a man of exceptional endurance and charm.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Virginia Mary Fichera, of Sterling, NY and a son, Joseph Sebastian Fichera, of New York City.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held Wednesday evening, September 25, 2013 at 7 pm at Holy Apostles Church, 7 Austin Street (off of Lyell Avenue) followed by a reception. The burial will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 10 am in Holy Sepluchre Cemetery.
The family will only accept donations towards his monument in Holy Sepluchre and can be sent to S. Natalie Fichera, c/o Fairport Baptist Home, 4646 Nine Mile Point Rd, Fairport, N.Y. 14450. Other donations should be in the form of additional kindness and thoughtfulness to others that you meet each day as Sebastian lived his life.
