Brighton: February 3, 2014 peacefully at age 104, surrounded by her family. Born February 22, 1909 in Holyoke, MA, Eleanor enjoyed life to the fullest in the spirit of adventure and giving. She was the first fourth-generation graduate of Mount Holyoke College and moved to Rochester after her graduation and marriage. She was a volunteer and participant in many Rochester community organizations, and taught 4th grade early in her career. Eleanor loved travel well into her later years, going on her own to the north slope of Alaska at age 88, taking the Olympic bobsled run at Lake Placid at age 90, and hot air ballooning at age 100. An avid sports enthusiast, Eleanor played tennis, paddle and golf well into her 90s. She died just three weeks short of her 105th birthday.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husbands, Peter Snell in 1934 and Kenneth C. D. Hickman in 1979. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Scott Schilling. She is survived by her sons, Peter C. (Tanya) Snell and Bryan D. (Beth) Hickman; daughters Elizabeth (Terry) Schilling and Margaret Mitchell; nine grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren.
Friends are invited to call Saturday, Feb. 22 from 4-6 PM at the Chatterbox Club, 25 N. Goodman St., Rochester, NY 14607. The family will hold a private service.
