Short, Madeline R.

Rochester: Friday, June 13, 2014, at The Friendly Home. June 16 would have been her 92nd birthday.

Madeline moved here with her husband, Jim Short, who'd been working for Xerox for about six years, in 1975. Prior to joining the firm, he'd been a Marine Corps officer for almost 30 years, and they had moved more than 20 times. When they arrived in Monroe County, Madeline said to herself, "Home." This was her kind of place.

Madeline joined Literacy Volunteers, PEO, the Pittsford Garden Club, her Kappa Kappa Gamma alumni chapter, the Century Club, the Landmark Society of Western New York and Christ Episcopal Church in Pittsford. She believed in a life of service--with some fun thrown in.

She was born in Chillicothe, MO to Irene and Warren Roberts, parents who also believed in community and helping others. From an early age, she pretty much excelled at everything: high school valedictorian, studies in history at the University of Missouri, graduate work at Columbia University. She married Jim in 1945, and they were together until his death in 1989.

Madeline is survived by her daughter, Alice Short and her husband Steve Vielhaber and grandchildren Greg and Madeline Vielhaber; by Sone Namkeopannha and her husband Phone; by granddaughters Michelle, Patti, Mary and Amy and their husbands; by her great-granddaughters Melinda, Mayuree, Jocelyn and Madeline; by her beloved caretakers Leslie Miller and Kay Brown; and many wonderful friends.

Friends may call Monday, June 16, from 5-7 PM at the funeral chapel (2305 Monroe Ave.). A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 36 S. Main St., Pittsford, NY 14534. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or the Landmark Society of Western New York, 133 South Fitzhugh St., Rochester, NY 14608.
