Buckman, Lewis E.

Canandaigua: Age 91, died March 12, 2011. He is survived by 2 daughters, Susan (Bruce) Lawrence and Fay (Thomas) Corr; 3 grandchildren, David Corr and wife, Karen Smilowitz, Christopher Corr and wife, Claire Willard and Brian Corr; 3 great-grandchildren, Eli, Alex and Alanna Corr; brother, Herman Buckman. He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Ruth (Paul) Buckman and son, Paul Buckman. Lewie was part of "The Greatest Generation" and a decorated WW2 veteran. He served in the National Guard 101st Cavalry, which was a horse cavalry regiment out of Geneseo. The regiment was Federalized in 1941 and later in the war years became a mechanized tank unit serving in Patton's Army in Europe. Lewie was a tank commander. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and Conspicuous Service Cross. After a long recovery in VA hospitals from serious wounds, he returned to his wife and family and lived in the Lima, West Bloomfield area for the rest of his life. He worked for 35 years as an animal technician at the Atomic Energy Project at the University of Rochester. His Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 20 at 2:00 at the First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VA Medical Center, 400 Fort Hill Ave., Canandaigua, NY 14424, c/o Voluntary Services. Checks may be written to VAVS.
