Unger, Florence H.

Kenmore, NY: Died May 22, 2012 at the age of 94 years. The former Florence Julia Haberer was born in Lowville, and is predeceased by her husband Willis E. Unger with whom she enjoyed 45 years of blissful marriage in Scottsville, NY. Siblings John Haberer, Margaret Martin, Elizabeth Avallone and Mary Helen Machell, all predeceased their sister. Long before women's liberation, Mrs. Unger earned her Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degrees in Library Science at Albany University. She was an accomplished athlete, excelling in basketball, swimming, bowling and tennis. Mrs. Unger with her husband managed the Hart's Grocery Store in Scottsville, before Mrs. Unger began her long career as a teacher and librarian at the T.J. Connor Elementary School on the street where they lived, and where they raised their boys William J. (Carol) Unger of Manhattan and Dr. Thomas E. (Candice) Unger of Buffalo, NY. She was a Cub Scout leader and was proud when her sons attained Eagle Scout status. In addition to her sons, she is survived by a granddaughter Meredith P. Unger, who graduated in June from Smith College; her grandson Thomas W. Unger, a student at Boston University and several nieces and nephews. Florence enjoyed knitting, crocheting and hooking rugs. She loved her canine companion and gardening, and nurtured her Beagle "Dudley" and her flowers for many years. Mrs. Unger made an anatomical gift of her body to the University at Buffalo Medical School.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a time to be announced. Interment will be alongside her late husband in the Unger plot at the Clearview Cemetery in North Cohocton/Atlanta, NY. Flowers gratefully declined, donations in her memory may be made to the Scottsville, NY Free Library.
