Bergen/Cape Vincent: After showing tremendous courage, Fred passed away on September 14th, 2012 at the age of 77. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Mildred (Smith) Bater, infant daughter Donna, and the mother of his children Mildred L. (Hayes), 7 sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his loving and caring wife Doris (Dorie) (Goss) Bater; children, Deborah (David) Zastrocky, Jean (Billy) Streb, Barbara (William) Presutti, Michael (Diane) Bater; stepchildren, Douglas USCG CWO4 Retired (Kathy), Charles, Thomas Coveny, Ellen (Randy) Boyce; grandchildren, USCG Chief Petty Officer Joshua (USCG Petty Officer 2nd Class Hannah) Coveny, Joye (USCG Chief Petty Officer Jason) Steele, Jody Huffman, USAF Captain Jessica (USAF Staff Sergeant Jason) Stone, Joseph (Eileen), Amanda (USN AW02 Jordan Munoz) Streb, Dominic Presutti, Abbie and Lindsay Bater; step grandchildren, Amy (Jay Smith), Kevin (Heather) Zastrocky, Nicholas Presutti, Elizabeth (Christ) Nauman, Sara Coveny; great grandchildren, Jasmine and Austin Coveny, Mackenzie Huffman, William Stacy, Lillian Streb. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Dorothy (Daniel) Flanagan, Isabelle (Robert) Whaley, June (Nelson) Ralston; 2 brothers, Karl (Rosemary) and Robert (Mary Bethel) Bater; sisters-in law, Shirley and Dorothy Bater, and brother-in law, Ed Goss.
Fred was a veteran of the US Navy, enlisting at the age of 17, and served aboard the USS Waccamaw (AO-109) during the Korean Conflict. A devoted family man, he retired from Roehlen Engraving to the 1000 Islands where he enjoyed fishing, wood working, and telling jokes to his many, many friends in the Beadle Point area. He was a member of the American Legion for 57 years, most recently Post 821 Clayton, NY.
Celebration of Life will be held at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a local Veterans Outreach or Caring for Cats in Chaumont NY.
