Pittsford: March 26, 1930 — November 4, 2012. Born in New York City to Ethel Stokes Hoyt and Franklin Vail Peale, grew up on the shore of Long Island Sound in Darien, CT. He attended Middlesex School, Harvard College ('52) and Johns Hopkins Medical School ('56). From 1963 until he retired in 2000, Frank practiced orthopaedic surgery, specializing in pediatric orthopaedics, in Rochester, NY at The Genesee Hospital, and as the attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Birth Defects Clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital. During his professional career, he served as President of the Medical and Dental staff of the Genesee Hospital in 1983, was on the Board of Directors of the Monroe County Medical Society, and the Board of Directors of the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester.
Frank and his wife of 57 years, Frances Reese Peale (d. March 4, 2012), raised three children in Brighton and moved to Pittsford in 1994. Frank is survived by his children, Martha Vail, Franklin Vail and David Reese Peale; his granddaughters Anne Estelle Peale and Emma Reese Peale; his brother Sherman and sister Janet Peale Hubbard.
Frank was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, an unfailingly generous, vigorous and gentle man who was sincerely grateful for the companionship of his family and friends. He loved the natural world, photography, sailing, woodworking, golf and tennis. Frank rowed at Harvard and, in his later years, took great pleasure in supporting other enthusiasts at the Pittsford Boat House. He served on the vestry at St. Paul's Church, and deeply appreciated his community and the abiding spirit of Christ Episcopal Church Pittsford.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday, November 16, 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church Pittsford on Friday. In lieu of flowers, please offer donations in Franklin's name to Christ Episcopal Church Pittsford (36 South Main Street, Pittsford, NY 14534) and to Benincasa (3880 Rush-Mendon Road, Mendon, NY 14506) in deep appreciation of their dedication to hospice care.
