Colin Gieg, 70, lost his 15- month battle with pancreatic cancer on March 11, 2013, his wife Cecilia by his side. A native of California, Colin began his career as a musician while still in high school, playing professionally with local bands. His music studies continued at Westlake College of Music, the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and with jazz bassist Ralph Peña. Following college, Colin performed with a variety of groups including the Four Freshmen, Sue Raney, several years with singer Johnny Mathis and a period of time with the Don Ellis Jazz Orchestra. Since moving to Denver in 1969, Colin was very active in the Colorado music scene including numerous jazz parties and concerts with nationally known artists as well as national and international tours. He performed with such greats as Rosemary Clooney, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Peanuts Hucko, Ralph Sutton and Joe Williams. He is survived by sister Carman Thompson, sons Kevin and Kelly Gieg (Anna), step-daughter Nicole Klotz (Stuart), grandchildren Terence, Susan, Pierce, and Avery Gieg, step-grandchildren Dylan and Nathan Klotz. A celebration of Colin's life will take place Saturday, March 23 at DazzleJazz, 930 Lincoln St., Denver, from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.
