Donald Wright Hoagland, having lived a wonderful 90 years passed away peacefully on Saturday May 5, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He lived one week shy of his 63rd anniversary to his beloved bride, Mary Tiedeman Hoagland. They made Denver their home over 60 years ago, raised four children, Peter Hoagland, Mary Hoagland-Scher, Sara (Suki) Hoagland and Ann Hoagland Simonds and nurtured ten grandchildren.
Don was born, Donald David in New York City, August 16th, 1921. After the death of his father in 1926, he moved to Ohio and was adopted by Webster Comely Hoagland. Don attended Phillips Exeter Academy (1939), Yale University (B.A. 1943) and, after service in the Navy as a carrier based pilot in World War II, he received his law degree from the Columbia University of Law (LL.B., 1948). He was a member of the Board of Editors of the Columbia Law Review. After a few years with Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts in New York, Don moved to Denver in 1951 to join Davis, Graham and Stubbs, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. Throughout his career he championed Legal Aid service as a responsibility of the profession and a means of making better lawyers.
He dedicated his next twenty years to a wide variety of endeavors to advance healthcare ethics, policy and education including serving as the first Executive Director of the Center for Health Ethics and Policy under the University of Colorado (Denver) Graduate School of Public Affairs and as co-chairman with Governor Romer on his Panel of Health Advisors and worked tirelessly to create the Colorado School of Public Health.
Don was a giant in the legal community, an author, teacher, tutor, athlete and champion of community service. Above all, he was a terrific husband, father, grandfather and mentor whose kind, wise ways will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, May 12th at 10am at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law with a reception immediately following. Sturm College of Law is located at 2255 East Evans Avenue. The "L Lot" parking will be available. The parking lot entrance is at Asbury and South Gaylord.
