Evelyn Brewster

Evelyn Brewster, former Public Library Consultant for the Colorado State Library, Denver, died July 25, 2013, at age 97. She was born February 1, 1916, near Volin, South Dakota, to Ingward and Marie (Lee) Hoxeng. Her mother contracted tuberculosis and died; and so as a very young child, she went to live with Ole and Marie (Lien) Vognild, also of Volin. Evelyn graduated from Volin High School, attended Yankton College nearby, and taught elementary grades for six years. Later she earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University Of Denver Graduate School Of Librarianship. She was a Library Consultant at the South Dakota State Library; the Librarian of the Deadwood, South Dakota Public Library; and a Public Library Consultant at the Colorado State Library from 1957 until her retirement in 1981. Evelyn married George R. Brewster of Deadwood in 1951. He was a C.P.A. and was employed by the State of Colorado Division of Accounts and Control, retiring in 1985. He died in 1988. She was preceded in death by her parents and foster parents, a brother Irving who died in childhood, and a sister Mrs. Kenneth Wright, Rapid City, South Dakota. She is survived by a half-brother, Kenneth Hoxeng of Valentine, Nebraska; two nieces, seven nephews, and their children and grandchildren; and many cousins. Evelyn was President of the South Dakota Library Association, the Colorado Library Association, the Mountain-Plains Library Association, receiving awards from each of them, and served on the Council of the American Library Association. She was a 50-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and The Delta Gamma Society International, from which she received the Omega State Award. Services will be held at the Augustana Lutheran Church, 500 East Alameda Avenue, at 1:00 p.m. on August 1st, 2013.
