Arthur V Phelps, an award winning Physicist and decades long "fellow" of the Joint Institute of laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) located on the CU Boulder campus passed away at the age of 89 on December 14, 2012. Dr. Phelps was a leading member of his field of atomic - molecular physics as well as chemical physics. He was a pillar of his scientific community and his passing marks the changing of an era in the field of Physics. He was a lifelong mentor of Physicists around the world and developed many research programs. He published over 110 professional research papers and also refereed his colleagues' research papers as a hobby and for enjoyment. Dr Phelps was the first recipient of the coveted APS "Will Allis Prize" in 1990, his greatest accomplishment. Dr Phelps will be remembered for his kindness and mild mannered demeanor. He treated colleagues with the greatest respect, while patiently educating them how to best approach a problem and steering them to the relevant resource. He was a loving father of 2 grown children, Wayne Phelps and Joanie (Phelps) Gilbert. On Friday, 2/22/2013 a Memorial/Open house service is scheduled from 3-6 PM at CU Boulder Campus JILA building.
