John Arthur Obituary


ARTHUR, JOHN John Arthur, Denver native and former resident, died in Binghamton, NY, on Monday January 22, of cancer. He was 60 years old. He is survived by his wife, Amy Shapiro, formerly of Denver; his sister Julie Arthur Osborne, brother-in-law Michael Osborne and nephew Jeffrey Osborne, all of Denver; cousins Patrick, Mary, Sara, Michael and Erin Gleason of Steamboat Springs; uncle and aunt Robert and Betty Gleason of Punta Gorda, Florida, and uncle and aunt John and Annette Arthur of Baltimore, Maryland. At the time of his death, Dr. Arthur was a Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University, State University of New York, where he had taught since 1988. Previously, he taught at Tennessee State University, Lake Forest College, College of Charleston, Brandeis University and Harvard University. Dr. Arthur earned his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, and his B.A. from Cornell College. He was an honorary fellow of Balliol College, Oxford University. He is a 1964 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Denver. Funeral Service, 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church,1400 S. University Blvd. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Arthur Fund, Binghamton University, P.O. Box 6000, Binghamton, NY 13902.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
