Richard Masters Obituary

Richard L. Masters, M.D., born July 10, 1931; died October 19, 2014. Dr. Masters passed peacefully at his home. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Rae; his sons, Brian, Kenneth, and Ross; his beloved daughters-in-law, Kara, Shelly, and Mary Jeanne; and his grandson, Addison (Max) Graham. Dr. Masters, the youngest of five boys, graduated from Wayne University, the University of Michigan, and Harvard University. He served our country as a physician in the United States Air Force and in the Central Intelligence Agency. Dr. Masters then served as the first Aeromedical Advisor to the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). In this position, he conducted very significant studies for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Also with ALPA, he and Captains Rod Gilstrap and Gil Chase developed groundbreaking alcohol and substance abuse treatment and prevention programs. With his consultation service, Aviation & Preventive Medicine Associates, he handled over 22,000 pilot medical cases, including more than 1,500 alcohol and substance abuse cases. Dr. Masters' lifetime of service and achievement earned him an honorary membership in ALPA, the first physician to achieve this honor. He shares this rare honor with Orville Wright, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and General James Doolittle. Celebration of Life, Saturday, October 25, at 11 am. Luncheon reception to follow. Services to be held at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver. I am deeply sorry to hear of Dr. Masters passing. My brother, Rick Barcheski, has benefited from his medical input on his particular diaganosis, but more importantly, he was a family friend and adviser.
Please know how much our family mournes his passing and hopes the family will cherish the knowledge that others found him so wonderful. He played an important role and we give his familly a hug of thanks and friendship.

Dr. Richard Masters played an important medical role in the diagnosis and treatment of my episode of malignant melenoma in 1975. My father (Capt. Richard Barcheski, HAL, Retired) contacted him then at his newly established ALPA Aeromedical Advisory office in Denver, Colorado and asked him to assist me in the treatment, recovery, and the subsiquent medical re-qualification with the FAA. His medical expertise and his gentle, personal guidance played a significant role in maintaining an attitude of optomism and success in overcoming this potentially fatal disease.

Dr. Masters and his office staff continued to medically advise me throughout my career whenever an event threatened my FAA medical certificate. He often extended his medical referrals to the members of my family. He and his wife, Ruth, became personal friends as well.

His contributions to thousands of airline pilots continued even into retirement. He is responsible for the widening of acceptable medical conditions with the FAA; thus allowing the continuation of many careers, including mine.

My family will be forever greatful for his generous gifts as a physician and a friend.
