Grace Thaemert Obituary
100 years old, of Denver. Born June 15, 1913 in Weta Township, SD. Passed away Mar. 24, 2014. Preceded in death by her husband of 49 years John Walter Thaemert in 1987. Grace had 4 daughters and 4 sons, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchilden and 7 great, great grandchildren. When she was about 3 years old Grace moved from SD to Cheyenne Wells, CO with her mother Augusta, sisters Alice and Ida and brother Herman. Her father, Harrison Garfield Sweeney was in the SD National Guard and the last letter he wrote to the family was blown away unopened in an eastern Colorado wind gust. He was never heard from again. Grace's mother then married Jake Harvie in Cheyenne County and had 3 sons, Ozborne, Jay and Glen. All 6 siblings preceded Grace in death. Along with siblings, Grace walked or rode a horse 4 miles to a country school. When they got home from school, they would often have to go round up the sheep that stepfather Jake had let wander all day. Town and supplies were 16 miles away, an all day trip by horse and buggy. When Grace was eight years old she began playing the piano by ear along with her uncles Paul Piltz on the harmonica and August "Happy" Piltz on the fiddle at Saturday barn dances. The playing continued until she moved to Denver at age 14 with her sister Ida. She graduated from East H.S. The sisters and other young women friends worked as domestic help at prominent Denver addresses. Each Thursday, their day off, the young ladies met at a set time under the clock tower in downtown Denver, because none of them had a watch. They were called the Thursday girls. Grace married Walt Thaemert on June 5, 1938 at Grace Lutheran Church in Denver. Sons and daughters are Dale (Lovice) Thaemert, Spokane, WA; Ronald (Norma) Thaemert, Bellvue, CO; Dona (Donald) Troyer, Lakewood, CO; Wayne (Ginny) Thaemert, Manassas, VA; Carl (Cheryl) Thaemert, Arvada, CO; Rita Thaemert (Robert McAllister), Denver, CO; Loretta Christie of Denver, CO and Elaine (Robert) Larson, Park City, UT. Grace was the first female member of the board of elders at Grace Church in the early 1960s. All eight of the children attended Lutheran elementary and Denver Lutheran H.S. Grace and Walt were very active in Lutheran Layman's League and proudly spoke of a time when they attended three Lutheran Funerals in one day. Grace continued to play the piano right up to her 100th birthday. Since July 2010 she has been lovingly cared for at her home by her daughters Loretta and Rita. The family would like to thank her fellow Lutheran friends for so much kind support over many years. Visitation, Sun. Mar. 30, from 1-4 p.m., at Olinger Hampden in Denver. A farewell service and celebration will be held Mon. Mar. 31, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Aurora. Contibutions in memory of Grace can be made to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or Christ Lutheran Church, 2695 S. Franklin St. Denver, CO 80210.
