Gerald Jensen Obituary

Gerald L. Jensen, "Jerry," 76, died December 5, 2016 in The Woodlands, Texas, of heart failure arising from an earlystage battle with lymphoma. Jerry was born January 6, 1940, to Cyril and Shirley Jensen in Rawlins, Wyoming. Jerry was his mother's son, dutiful and kindhearted, with the rare traits of being both ambitious and selfless. His personal successes were many. He was a scholar-athlete at Wheat Ridge High School and Brigham Young University, a Harvard Law graduate, a commissioned Naval officer, a community activist, an attorney, a serial entrepreneur with vast success in energy and real estate, and a committed philanthropist focused on microlending in Africa. Yet throughout his life, he was never defined by his accomplishments, and he retained the frugality and humility instilled in him by his Depression-era parents. Jerry had many interests and passions. He was a licensed pilot, an avid reader, and an extensive traveler. He loved sports and ran sprints into his 40s, found golf in his 50s, played basketball into his 70s, and refused to ever quit skiing despite a knee replacement. He was a devoted Broncos fan from the time he acquired season tickets in the 1960s until - literally - the day of his passing. He loved to discuss politics, economics, and religion, and he adored family reunions and tracing his family's lineage. Spirituality was a central aspect of Jerry's life and took roughly three stages. During his early life he was a devout Mormon, in his middle years he was a reasoned skeptic, and in his later years he was a pragmatic believer in Christianity and an active member of the Methodist Church. Jerry's greatest legacy stems from the indispensable role he played in the lives of his friends and family. He was a loyal friend to many, with a subtle wit and an easygoing nature; an honorable son who made his parents proud; an unfailingly helpful and caring brother; a patient, devoted father whose wisdom and moral guidance shaped the character of his children; a doting, warm, and highly involved grandparent; and a faithful and loving husband. He was, simply put, a pillar of strength, the one to turn to in moments of need, and the man you always knew would make the ethical and right decision. Jerry is survived by his wife, Colleen; his daughter Jackie and his granddaughter Haley; his son Jon, his daughter-in-law Amy, and his grandsons, Owen and Lucas; his son Brett and his daughter-in-law Anna; his son Chris and his daughter-in-law Meredith; his brothers Larry, Julian, and James; and his many nephews and nieces and other extended family, all of whom he loved so much. Jerry was my friend for many years in school in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, but then Jerry was everyone’s friend. He never had an enemy and I never heard him say a bad word about anybody. He was one of the most accomplished people I have known - athlete, scholar, intellect, businessman, philanthropist, but you would never know it - humble throughout life and always talked about, not himself - he would have made a GREAT President of the United States, wise, capable and compassionate. I miss him. We should all strive to have such a bio and obituary written about us - REST IN PEACE, my friend - Shep

I worked for Jerry and Colleen in the early 2000's.Jerry was a wonderful man, who was a pleasure to work for, I learned so much from all the Jensens, and will always be grateful to Jerry.

So sad to hear of Jerry's passing. He was a man whose character and integrity is to be imitated. I met Jerry for the first time in about 2010 via a referral from a mutual friend. I had just started an oil marketing company and needed an outlet for some oil I had just started purchasing from a new client. I was in a bind. Jerry was kind enough to let me use one of his truck stations (Pecos Gathering) until I was able to get my ducks lined up. Jerry and one of his sons (John?) came to my office to discuss a deal. Being comfortable with each other and after a hand-shake, he wrote out a contract BY HAND on a yellow tablet that we executed. I am forever grateful, and will always remember, his kindness and helpfulness in helping me start my business.
God bless.

He was the best of the best. I admired him greatly. He had the gift of always listening, always caring. He was better than the rest of us at almost everything. I will miss him terribly, already do - his smile, his laugh, his friendship - the Lord has a new "good guy" to use as example for others

To the Jensen family, friends, associates and classmates,

I remember Jerry as a teenager - he was one of the good guys and I liked him very much. Now I can see and appreciate all of his accomplishments and his efforts to make the world a better place.

Our Alaska natives believe that the stars are are openings in Heaven where the love of lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. Let each of us smile back at Jerry as we remember him today.

Dear Jerry-- your brothers will greatly miss you. We will miss your exuberance for life, your wise counsels, your kindness and charity for others, your enduring optimism, your gracious and sharing nature. Our separation might be unbearable were it not for the belief that tonight you live and celebrate reunions in the great hall of our ancestors.
