William Cant McClearn, 84, passed away May 8. He was born August 12, 1927 in Duluth, Minnesota. A veteran of
, Bill graduated from the University of Colorado Law School in 1951 where he was class president and a member of the Law Review. Bill joined the law firm of Holland & Hart in Denver as a law clerk in 1950. He remained there his entire legal career, serving as head of the litigation department, chair of the Management Committee, and Firm Chairman.
Bill was a past president of the Colorado Bar Association and the Denver Bar Association. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association, was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a fellow of the American Bar Association, and a fellow of the Colorado Bar Foundation. Bill received the William Lee Knous Award, CU Law School's highest award, in 1990. In 2000, Bill was awarded the Colorado Bar Association Award of Merit.
He was married to the love of his life, Evelyn, for 59 years. Together they enjoyed golf and travel. Bill was particularly fond of skiing, his many wonderful friends both within and outside the legal community, his extended family, and raspberries.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children Bill Jr. (Vanessa), Barbara Baumann (Fred), and Maggie King (Andy) as well as six grandchildren (Hugh McClearn, Ian McClearn, Peter Baumann, Stewart McClearn, Patrick King, and Elizabeth King). He was predeceased by his brother, Hugh McClearn, and his sister, Jean McClearn McMinn.
A memorial service will be held at First Plymouth Congregational Church, 3501 South Colorado Boulevard, Englewood CO on Monday May 14 at 3 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the Denver Country Club.
