Fred Heineken Obituary
Fred Heineken passed away peacefully in San Diego, CA on Nov. 19, 2012 after collapsing and falling into a coma. He was born in 1939 and grew up in Wilmette, IL with his three siblings, Marie Lou, Bill, Avy, and parents, Fred and Ria. Fred was active in the Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout before graduating from the New Trier High School in 1957. He received a B.S in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern in 1962 and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Fred started his career at the Monsanto company and spent significant time in Denver, CO at Cobe Labs before completing a 25 year career at the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C. During his career, Fred was a visible, hard working and stoic leader for three academic generations in the field of metabolic engineering and microbiology. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, received awards for distinguished service at the National Science Foundation and held leadership posts with the American Chemical Society. Fred was an even more accomplished father and grandparent and is survived by his son Chris Heineken, daughter-in-law Katy Heineken and three granddaughters Sarah, Emma, Megan. A memorial service is being held on Dec. 8 at 2:00 PM at the Palomar Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (1600 Buena Vista Dr. Vista, CA). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the .
