Henry Vaag Obituary
Henry O. Vaag, 88, of Wheat Ridge passed away at his home from heart failure on Monday, March 11. Henry was born on July 4, 1924 in Colorado Springs. He graduated as Valedictorian of Colorado Springs High School and Colorado College. He earned an MA in English from the University of Illinois and a Master of Library Science from the University of Denver. Henry never received a grade lower than an A. Henry was Professor of English and Choral Studies at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, was Assistant Director of the El Paso Public Library for two years, and worked at Denver Public Library for 33 years. He was Director of Literature and History, and also enjoyed working at the genealogy and reference desks. Henry loved life. Among his pleasures were reading, gardening, fishing, hiking, cats, reference questions, food, travel, singing, classical music, baseball, televised sports, shopping, croquet, Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, and Daylight Savings Time. He married Mildred Appling of Santa Fe, NM on January 1, 1950. Henry is survived by Mildred, their six children, and their spouses: Enid and Rick Wood of Bastrop, TX; Myra and Bill Lugsch of Golden, CO; Erik and Donna Vaag of Boulder, CO; Kurt Vaag of Arvada, CO; Joel Vaag of Fairfield, NJ; and Sara and Ted Holland of Arvada, CO. Henry was greatly loved by his grandchildren: Tristen Vieaux and her husband Don; Tyler and Veronica Holland; Matthew and Ryan Vaag; and Mitch and Dean Lugsch. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 15th at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1600 Grant St. in downtown Denver, 80203. A reception will follow the service at the church.
