BAYARD SWEENEY Obituary

Bayard K. "Barry" Sweeney III, age 79, of Evergreen passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in Denver. Barry was born in Denver, Colorado on February 6, 1938 to Bayard Sweeney Jr. and Anne Shepard Sweeney. He was the eldest of four children. Barry attended the Canterbury School, Yale College and the University of Colorado where he received the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa key in history in 1963. Barry had a distinguished executive career in the automotive industry, from which he retired at the age of 53. Earlier, he worked alongside his father at BK Sweeney Manufacturing, a well-known Denver company specializing in maintenance tools for trucks and aircraft. Barry's passion for history and learning spurred him to travel extensively around the world alongside his beloved wife, Georgia. At home, he enjoyed the freedom of an outdoorsman's life. He could often be found exploring the Colorado countryside on horseback. Barry was a passionate Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche fan and was still playing volleyball, softball and pickle ball just a few months prior to his passing. He was an enthusiastic member of the Zane Grey and Tesoro societies and an avid supporter of the NRA. Barry is survived by his devoted wife of 59 1/2 years, Georgia Ann Mattern Sweeney; his five loving children and their spouses, Bayard IV (Anne) Sweeney, Nicholas (Celia) Sweeney, Christopher (Christine) Sweeney, Dana (Rodrigo) Trujillo and Suzanne (Michael) Wilson; his younger brother, Kevin Sweeney; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Bayard Jr.; his mother, Anne Shepard Sweeney; his stepmother, Anne Evans Freyer Sweeney; his brother, Shepard Sweeney and his sister, Karen Rapson. Barry was a devout parishioner at Our Lady of the Pines Roman Catholic Church. The family requests donations to Catholic charities in lieu of flowers. Barry's life will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Pines Roman Catholic Church in Conifer on Saturday, January 6th at 11am. Reception details will be available after the Mass on Saturday.

Georgia and family, I can not find words to express my surprise and sorrow at learning of your loss. He was one of Ron and my favorite friends at the Denver Westerner meetings. Seeing Barry was always a pleasure.
I will remember him particularly for his thoughtfulness, and also for his informatative historical descriptions. A favorite may have been the Civil War, the battles and men, and fascinating details right down to the primary food that sustained the soldiers, I think it was "hardtack." He was a true American, a special spirit.
Barry will surely be missed by many.

So sorry to hear of Barry's passing. He was a special uncle to my daughters. A wonderful man - generous and passionate in thought, word and deed. A loving family man, whose own five children are themselves a living testament to his legacy. My special condolences to Georgia... from her ex-brother-in-law. He was the most intelligent and hardworking boss I ever had. He was also a neighbor and friend to my husband and me. We enjoyed many company events and lunches together. He was always fair to his employees and had an open door for suggestions to improve working conditions and the company in general. He was always full of energy..never saw him walking slowly through the warehouse or offices to overlook things. He had a great smile and subtle sense of humor. When he was promoted in his job to Pennsylvania, his guidance, wisdom and caring were greatly missed by his employees. We are keeping him and his beautiful family in our prayers. May God be with you during this sorrowful time.
