Robert Stump Obituary

Ret. Lt. Col. Robert C. Stump, Army, passed away on July 13, 2013 at the age of 95. Born in Kenmore, Ohio on May 16, 1918, he grew up in nearby Manchester and graduated from Canal Fulton High School in 1935, and Ohio State University in 1939 before entering military service with the artillery regiment of the U.S. Army Seventh Calvary Brigade Mechanized at Ft. Knox, Ky. He participated in the Louisiana Maneuvers headquartered at Fort Polk.
R.C. Stump served as an artillery battalion commander during WWII in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany with the Seventh Armored Division and received the Bronze Star Medal, a Bronze Star Ribbon and was authorized four Bronze Service Star medals. After the war, he obtained a degree from Syracuse University, N.Y. in finance and accounting and later returned to Fort Polk as Post Controller. In addition to several stateside assignments, he served overseas tours of duty in Panama and Japan before retiring from the Army in 1964. He then pursued agricultural studies at Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas before moving to Beauregard Parish, to engage in tree farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick C. and Mabel (Ginther) Stump of Manchester, Ohio; and brother, Weldon F. Stump of Toledo, Ohio. Robert is survived by his spouse of 63 years, Wilma (Lewis) Stump of DeRidder; sister-in-law Joyce Stump and family of Toledo, Ohio; one son, Robert R. Stump and wife Stacey of DeRidder; one daughter, Linda D. Kempfe and husband Tim of Trinity, Texas; and five grandchildren, Ellie Kempfe of Denver, Colo., Zachary Stump of Houston, Jacqueline and Katharine Stump, both of New Orleans, and Lauren Stump of Baton Rouge.
Visitation will be from 8-10 a.m. on July 17 at the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder. Burial will follow in the Lewis Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder.
