Curtis Iles, Sr., 73, departed this life in his sleep at his home in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, Nov. 9 2016.

Curtis was born in Cottonport and moved to DeRidder with his parents when he was five years old. He was baptized at Starlight Baptist Church by the Rev. K.E. Robinson. He attended G.W. Carver High and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He married the late Margaret Caston of DeRidder. They had one son, Patrick (Naomi) of West Palm Beach, Fla.
He was married to his moving and devoted wife Faye Shotwell for 45 years and had a second son, Curtis Jr. (Leslie) of Houston. Together they had nine children and 32 grandchildren.
Curtis was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church of Houston and was retired from Houston Independent School District. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having received numerous awards. He was also certified as a hunting safety instructor.
Curtis was gifted in building and design. He made whirlybirds, wind chimes and chairs from metal soda cans. He designed and built furniture and installed fences.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian (Vegia) Iles; siblings Marsland (Billy), Ethel Sue, Oreatha, Annie Mae Iles and Larry (Shine) Vega.
Survivors include a remaining sibling, the Rev. David Iles and wife Brenda of DeRidder; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pastor David Iles will officiate. Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at New Bethlehem Baptist Church, Houston. Burial will be in Veterans Memorial Park, Houston on Monday, Nov. 21 at 9:45 a.m.
A memorial service will be at Chaddick Funeral Home, DeRidder, on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. and repast at the home of Pastor David Iles.
