Richard W. Schanz
"Dick"
Richard W. Schanz (Dick) survived a horrific car crash on May 10th, with minor injuries, only to return to home where he died peacefully in his sleep on May 13, 2013. Dick was born in 1926 in Bell, CA, to parents Curt Max Schanz and Reba Bolander. His parents owned a honey farm where they taught their sons early on to work hard. As a young man he joined the Marines and served overseas in WWII. Dick was honorably discharged in Aug. 1946. He married Alison Tucker in Provo in 1945 (later divorced) and thereafter graduated from the University of Arizona. With a young family he became District Manager for General Motors and moved his family to Montana and Washington. Later in life he worked in real estate investment and property development. In 1981, Dick married Vey Broussard. When he retired they moved to a home that Dick proudly designed on the Bloomington Golf Course. He enjoyed residing there for the last 20+ years where he became involved in sponsoring Cultural Arts and Education. His pride was financially supporting his grandchildren's college education. Dick went on to obtain his honorary doctorate and to establish a scholarship fund at the Salt Lake Community College for less fortunate students. He had many talents and loved to play bridge, golf, and travel. Our dad possessed a creative mind which resulted in several inventions and patents. He was a happy, cheerful, and motivated person who never turned away from a challenge. Dick is survived by Vey, his son Eric Schanz (Peggy), daughter Jill Schanz Babitz, grandchildren: Eric Schanz II, Carly Schanz, Philip Babitz (Jane), Kendra Babitz, Suzanne Babitz, and niece, Carol Schanz. Preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Curt Schanz. A graveside service was held in Murray, Utah with full military honors. Please share online condolences at www.jenkins-soffe.com

I have been personally touched so deeply from knowing Dick and his kind generosity for helping people less fortunate attain education. He was a genuinely good person who used his intelligence and creativity to better all. My sympathies go to his children and Vey...all remarkable people because of Dick.

Deepest condolences from the Salt Lake Community College community. We became very fond of Dick over the years. He was a good man with a generous heart who in 2003 established the Richard W. Schanz Family Scholarship endowment for students with need. We will all miss him greatly.
