"Mimi"
Martha Mildred Stewart, age 98, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother passed away peacefully December 22, 2012 due to cause's incident to age. Mother's life motto was "Be of good cheer". She set that example to the very end.
Mildred was born December 11, 1914, in Garland Utah, to Malcolm McDuff Rampton and Martha Eliza Gibson. Her early years were joyously spent growing up on her father's farm with her beloved parents, three bothers and five sisters. Though farm life was hard, her childhood was full of love and warmth that only an eternal family can provide. She loved her childhood and the values she learned from spending time with her sisters and her angel mother. The foundation of her lifelong love for the Lord and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was formed during these early years. She often said "I have always had a testimony from the day I was born, I never doubted."
Mother's adolescent years were spent in Ogden, Utah. She was known for her beauty, elegant manner, and her wonderful laugh. It was here she caught the attention of Grant Herbert Stewart. From the moment he saw walk past the window at the dentist's office he knew she was the girl he would marry. Herb stole his first kiss on the roller coaster at Lagoon while Mildred was holding on with both hands. They were sealed May 20, 1937 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They lived in Ogden, devoted to each other and the prospects of a new life together. Their plans were soon interrupted by World War II, when Herb was called to serve as an officer in Europe for four years. During that time Mildred traveled to different locations around the country with her sweetheart as he trained and prepared for war. In each location Mother involved herself in the local ward or branch and fearlessly shared her testimony with everyone she came in contact with. To this day she hears from friends and families of people she had influenced for good during this time. She was loved by everyone. She spread happiness and positive feelings where ever she went.
After the war Mother's greatest joy came with the birth of her son Charles. A few years later another son arrived, Grant. The greatest highlight in her life was being a mother, raising her children and supporting her husband as he built a successful business in Ogden. As the boys became more independent in their teenage years, she decided to go back to college and get a degree in English and Education. Mother loved the classics and taught high school for a number of years in the Ogden and Weber school district. Here she received many honors for her excellent results in the classroom. Many of her past students have said if Mrs. Stewart had not taught them to read and write they would not have been successful in their professional pursuits. Mildred enjoyed traveling. She visited nearly every part of the world as she traveled with her husband as well as a group of "lady friends" who shared the same enthusiasm for adventure. She was always busy with her rose garden, her fruit trees, canning fruit and having Herb transplant tress at their cabin.
Mother was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She devoted many hours of service to the young women's program as well as positions in the Relief Society. Her flair for good food and meaningful activities provided for social events that will be long remembered. Her greatest calling to serve came when she and Herb served together in the Johannesburg Temple as temple workers. They enjoyed this call, as they met and served with wonderful people from every part of the world. Serving others in the temple was a life changing experience for both of them. In more recent years she served in leadership positions in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers at the Eagle Gate apartments in Salt Lake City, where she lived during the last years of her life. She truly loved all those many friends and associations she made while living there.
Mom, whenever we left your home you told us that the Gospel was true, to be happy and to be of good cheer. Thank you for your wonderful example of that life's motto and goal. We will cherish our memories of you and dad, we are happy you were able to be home this year for Christmas with him and those you loved so dearly. Thanks to you we know we will see you again. Kiss Kiss.
Mildred is survived by her two sons, Charles H. (Nancy) Provo, Grant R. (Diane) North Salt Lake, 10 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
Preceded in death by her husband Grant Herbert Stewart.
The family extends its thankfulness to the Olympus Ranch Independent Living, Welcome Home Assisted Living and the caring professionals of Vista hospice for the loving care mother received. Thank you.
