Edgar Lee Jones, Jr., born March 6, 1923 in Alta Vista, Virginia, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 from causes incident to age. Edgar served in the navy in World War II
and the army in the Vietnam War
, earning several commendations, including a Bronze Star
. He also took part in a Nuclear Power Plant experiment under the ice cap in Greenland, spending eight months underground. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major and worked in nuclear power for the remainder of his career.
Edgar proposed by letter to his future wife, Ida Malissa Cox, while serving on the Naval Carrier, the U.S.S. Talbot. During a kamikaze attack to the ship, he lost all the money he had saved for the wedding in his bunk mattress when the mattress was used to plug a hole blown in the side of the ship. Edgar and Ida wed in Daly City, California on August 2, 1945.
Edgar is survived by his loving daughters, Cyndi Tromba of Springfield, Oregon and Deborah Morris (Larry) of Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as six adoring grandchildren (Isaac, Courtney, Justin, Whitney, Cassady, and Sequoya) and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Peggy Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, his son, Robert Arthur, and by siblings Clarence, James, Howard, Dorothy and Arlene.
The family would especially like to acknowledge the tender love and attention shown to Edgar by his Granddaughter Whitney Morris. He looked forward to seeing her and his dog Cody every Friday for the past two years.
A special thanks to those many caring individuals at Canyon Creek Assisted Living and Hospice of Utah who cared for him as their own.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights at 11:00 a.m. Those who would like to visit with the family may do so from 10:00 to 10:45. Interment will be at Roy City Cemetery, Roy, Utah.
