James Kenneth Harris
1922 - 2013
At age 90, Ken passed away peacefully, Monday, November 25th 2013 in Cheyenne Wyoming. He married his beloved wife Emma Margaret Koller in 1942. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple and married 66 years. He was a devoted husband and lovingly cared for Margaret until her death in 2009. Ken served as a Communications Officer in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II
from 1942 to 1945 as a radio operator aboard Liberty ships throughout the Pacific Theater.
Ken, the third of six children, was born December 20, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Vera Laura Hansen and Edward James Harris Jr. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Cleone Hughes, Ray Harris, Don Harris, Marjorie Eaby and is survived by his brother, Phil Harris who lives in Reno, Nevada.
Ken graduated from Stevens-Henagar College and spent 35 years working in traffic management and accounting. During retirement he and Margaret worked for the IRS and served as Employment Specialist Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was an avid reader of biographies and history. He loved chocolates and pumpkin pie.
He saw his greatest accomplishment of his life as his family. He was kind and compassionate to all. Our wonderful Dad is survived by his children: Anndra (Dennis Turville) Newbury Park, California, Russell Kenneth Harris (Margrit) Malakoff, Texas and Joanne (John Russell) Cheyenne, Wyoming, and by his 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren (2 pending), 4 great-great-grandchildren (1 pending).
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 30th at 2pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. Visitation will be held prior starting at 1pm. Burial in the Salt Lake City cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
