Our beloved husband, devoted father, loving brother, gentle uncle and loyal friend has fought the good fight and returned home with honor. He was born June 21, 1955 in Stuttgart, Germany where his parents were stationed with the army. He died peacefully in his home from natural causes on Dec 30, 2012.
He married the "love of his life", Janet Barton on June 14, 1977 in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated from Murray High and then attended the University of Utah. He was a firefighter
with Salt Lake County. In 1980 he became an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA where he had the opportunity to coordinate air security for the 2002 Olympics. He retired in 2006 after 26 years of service. He was a jack-of-all-trades: electrician, plumber, mason, carpenter, most excellent painter and a master with woodworking projects. He could and would make or fix anything for anyone who asked. He was wicked-good at skiing and used this skill to teach others. Compassionate and completely dedicated to his family, he made each one of his children feel special and like they were his favorite. He encouraged each child in their adventures- wakeboarding, skiing, doing backflips and taking motorcycle rides. He supported his children's choices in military, mission service and school. He was an active member of the LDS church. His light shines on through us.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Aleen Phinney.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, his children, Brandon, Andrea, and Sean (Kaelynne) and his sister Carlyn Jensen.
His viewing is Thursday, Jan. 3rd from 6-8 at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary in Murray. The funeral is Friday at noon with a viewing prior from 11-11:45 at the Valley View 12th Ward. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund or the Utah Food Bank.
